Fluro carobon

Postby Brads on Mon Apr 20, 2009 8:01 am

HI chaps, I've had a go using fluro carbon up at caddy. just thought I would give it a try as I've not used it before. Trying to make my rigs less visible I've had no result on it yet. I bought esp soft ghost 15lb. The only thing I don't like about it is how stiff the hair is. Would 12lb line be better or another make such as Korda IQ? Has anyone used both and which did you get on better with?

Cheers Nick, I've never tried D rigs before. Lately I've been using blow back rigs which don't work as well with stiff fluro. Another option maybe these Solar hair pins? What lb fluro do you use? Have you used the Korda stuff?

Hi Brads

Ive been trying flouro recently and find it a little stiff and if im honest a little prone to breaking sooner than i would expect.

I used to do well with my fav brand of low memory mono, with a couple bits of putty, and pre stretch it myself over the steam from a kettle, goes really straight and retains its flexability, and the little bits of putty nail it to the bottom

for the hairs on either rig if i want to get really neat presentation i knotless knot with a really low diameter mono or braid with the hair then hold the tag of line back down the shank of the hook, then knotless knot over the top with my hooklink if that makes sense

as long as the hair is really fine you can get away with whatever you want to use

for whats its worth!

ps any one know where i can get any decent snag bars?

Cheers for the tips guys, I have wasted a lot of money buying this and that in the past so I just I thought I'd ask you guys how things have worked for you before I go spending. Mono is another option I've not used for my rigs,
I have just bought some of the osprey clear set ups, I'm trying to come up with a rig to use with it.
On another note what leaders are you guys useing nowadays? I've been using leadcore at caddy Do any of you use no leader just mono straight through to the swivel?

Very true Matt, I'm still using that set up on one rod and trying different things on the other to see if I can improve on my catch rate :D My problem is I read all these carp mags and think 'thats a good idea' and then go spending :( Anyway hope to get up to caddy this weekend hopefully :D

Cant believe im saying this..But Nick very right  The magazines are good to get ideas from, but 99% of whats in there is to catch the angler not the fish, sure, i braid may have better qualitys than another, same as hooks etc, but once you find something you catch on, just improve it, dont try god knows how many differant rigs and lenghts etc, if you got a good bait in the right place at the time when they feeding or patrolling past your baits, you will catch. Water craft is the 1 most important thing to consider. Watch water wenever you can, lookk for regular sightings of fish, write down where you catch from and at what time, it will start making up a picture of what happens. Oh, and a shiny pair snag bars can help

agree with that, although my technique i find effective is nodding of for a snooze, thats prime time for a take, or taking a leak is another sure fire way to instigate a bite

or using some fancy snag ears, but i just wish i knew where i could get some

have heard that having purple hair works at this time of year too

Although i've not fished at cadover for long, i used to use esp gohst on a water up north where it almost doubled my catches as everyone else fished braid or combilink hooklinks. i've played about with it at cadover and so far ive found plain mono or a combi to get more takes, they seem to be able to eject the stiff link pretty easy. Have had a play making up a combi from fc and fine braid though joined with a leader know an inch above the hook and that seems to work, but no more so than a normal combi like mantis or snakebite so not really worth the effort to tie it. think watercraft is the main thing at cadover really, that and a sharp hook.
